Jason Becker, the Mozart of this era who doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. Becker was born to be a guitarist. When he was only fifteen years old he composed the ‘Perpetual Burn’ album which is one of the best guitar albums ever written. Him and Marty Friedman created the band ‘Cacophony’ in 1986, three years before the two pursued their solo careers. Music lovers would know Friedman as one of the greatest metal guitarists of all time, thanks to his time with the popular band ‘Megadeth’.
In 1991 Becker was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and was told he had less than five years to live. He got weaker and weaker until he couldn’t walk or speak. This didn’t stop him though. his father helped find a method for him to communicate with his eyes which he uses to write music even now.
He went on to release many albums, the most recent one being, ‘Triumphant Hearts’.
In 2012, a documentary was made about him titled, Jason Becker- Not dead yet.
Jason Becker is an inspiration to me not just for his breathtaking guitar skills but also for his resilient personality and never say die attitude.
I hope to be able to learn to play some of his music and do a tribute to him one day. By writing about him I hope I have inspired you to listen to his music.
